A visit to the Southern Highlands must include a visit to Red Cow Farm at Sutton Forest. I think this is my favourite garden to visit of all time. In the last 25 years I have been there four times. It's gorgeous planting, layout and design style is to be admired. It was so special to wander the grassy pathways with my son and husband. Ethan especially loved discovering what laid around each bend or within each garden room. An afternoon spent in gorgeous surroundings is simply the best way to reset and relax. We had a few days up in the Southern Highlands last week for tree consult work. We had a little time to check out the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens @shbotanicgardens in Bowral. Well worth the visit and can't wait to see how this garden develops. Their website has great info and you can see what is proposed for the site. This is a total community funded project. You can make a donation at the gate.

DAHLIA PLANTING 🌿Improve soils for Dahlias by

DAHLIA PLANTING
🌿Improve soils for Dahlias by digging through composted cow and composted sheep manure plus a premium garden compost. Its best not to use any poultry manure for Dahlia beds. Try to simple to do these soil improvements a month or so before planting the Dahlia tubers. Water the propped beds as you would if there was already plants growing in the beds.
🌿Planting hole for tubers should be 10- 15 cm deep and atleast twice the width of the tubers. I tend to use say a hand width hole.
🌿It is important to plant Tubers at the correct angle. A Dahlia Tuber has a neck usually this where eye or bud is found (this is where the growth will come from) . The long wobbly bit is the tail where the roots will come from. See image of Tuber labelled with these parts. Angle the tuber so that the tail is slightly below the neck and have the bud or eye facing upwards.
🌿Back fill the hole with site soil.
🌿Lightly water - try not to over water Dahlias especially at this stage as they can rot.
🌿Depending on height and flower size most Dahlias will need staking. You can do this at time of planting or once they start to shoot. Stay tuned for when I stake my Dahlias.

In this month's newsletter we have our list of the Top 10 plants in bloom.
One of our favourites is Chives - yes this is just the normal culinary onion chives. It puts on a beautiful display of flowers in spring, you can use its leaves and flowers in your cooking and it makes a pretty ornamental border plant. You could use it as an alternative to Liriopes or Mondo Grass. In cooler climates it will die down.

I'm really looking forward to presenting my landscape design workshop at @tambeakitchengarden (near Wagga) on Sunday 7 November 2021 from 2.30pm - 5.30pm. 🌿Workshop Outline🌿
In this informative but relaxed workshop I will take you step by step through the approach I take to create a landscape design that is practical, beautiful and effective. You will first establish the parameters of your particular space and your priorities (what do you need from the garden, what are the constraints) so as to ensure the design ticks the practicality box. I will then teach you the essential garden design principles, why they work and how to apply them for successful ‘bones’ to a garden, and to make the most of your space. We then look at key elements of garden styles, and how best to achieve your style through landscape materials and a complementary colour palette for a cohesive look and to ensure all the elements are working together. I will give you practical tips for the actual designing process, and demonstrate differing styles and elements from images of my previous projects to help you visualise the different concepts. $95 includes the workshop, a delicious afternoon tea and Tambea hospitality. I have to admit I have never really wanted to give gardeners a monthly to do list in their garden as if you are a gardener, this list can be and normally is never ending. So my first task for you this month is to make the time to enjoy your garden. Now that daylight saving has started, take the time to have a walk around the garden in the evening with a refreshing beverage to enjoy the garden or select a spot to take a seat where you can admire what you have created and cared for. As the old saying goes “Always make time to smell the Roses”.

🌻PLANTS IN BLOOM🌻
Welcome to our new monthly feature where we will focus on what plants are flowering for that month.
With our garden maintenance business we have the unique experience to be travelling around this region visiting our clients and their gardens. We travel up to 2 hours in any direction from Young for our garden maintenance clients and we will travel even further for our garden design consults. We do have the opportunity to see such a wide range of plant species. Below I share with you the flowering plants (for October) that I think are reliable, hardy and definitely worth growing in your garden. By sharing the names of the plants when they are flowering, I hope you can then select plants for locations in your garden that might need some hits of colour at that particular time of year. I know this newsletter goes out to people located all over Australia and other parts of the world. As a general guide if you live further north east of Young or on the coast I would say the plants listed here are flowering 3 – 4 weeks or so earlier. If you live further south most likely these plants will be a few weeks later. I have listed out the top ten plants that are in flower at the moment in the gardens at The Berkshires and around the Hilltops region below. I hope this gives you some plant inspiration.
