Happy First Day of Spring ! As I look back over the last few years on insta - sharing a photo of our Daffodil border is now becoming a tradition for the first day of spring.
The garden is awakening with so many blooms and blossoms opening up. It really is a time of beauty, colour and fragrance although I always think a garden should have features in every season it is hard to compete with the exuberance of Spring.

Some of my flowering beauties at home. All wonderful alternatives to cut flowers- Cyclamen, Phalenopsis Orchid and a Hyacinth.
The cyclamen and orchid have both been in flower since Mother's Day.
Cyclamen giving at Mother's Day has been a tradition in our family for 40 plus years. They are one the best flowering indoor plants.
My tips for growing them are..
-Water from the bottom by putting them in a saucer of water or thr sink. Only do this once a week. Overwatering is the fastest way to kill them.
- They hate heating so at night put them outside in the cold but remember to bring them in before the sun hits them.
- Remove spent flowers and leaves by gripping the bottom of the stem and gently twisting to remove the entire stem. Leaving parts of stem on the top of the corm can cause rot.
- When you buy the plant just check that the corm (type of bulb) it is growing from sits a little above the soil level ...if not try to scrap back some soil so it sits above soil level.

When it comes to planting out around existing trees and shrubs you need to take a few elements into consideration. - where are and what is the extent of the existing root systems. - how big will the existing plants grow to in spread and height. - what style of plants are they - will new plants tone in with existing plants. - how will the sun/ shade patterns change as the existing plants continue to grow. - what are their watering requirments - all plants in the one garden bed should have similar watering requirements.

Don't be limited to just using flowering annuals in your seasonal potted displays. I try to use a mix of flowering annuals, flowering perennials, edibles, herbs and succulents. Also consider using plants with a variety of foliage colours, foliage textures and leaf shapes.

This week's Plant of the Moment -
Callistemon "White ANZAC" Is a lovely small growing evergreen shrub that will grow to 1.5 m tall x 3 m wide . It provides a pretty white colloured alternative to the warmer tones of most Callistemon. If you're like me Im not a fan of red flowers in the garden so I always hesitate using this genus. It has lovely white to cream bottle brush flowers which appear in spring and summer. It will prefer a well drained soil in full sun. It will tolerate a light frost and drought once establed. It is an ideal planting for pollinators such as bee sand butterflys also for nectar eating birds. Like many Callistemon it will benefit from pruning after flowering as it can become straggly

VIRTUAL GARDEN CONSULTATIONS (For landscape design, horticultural advice and garden coaching) Whilst physically seeing a garden in person is always a bonus we can provide virtual consultation for those gardens that may be further afield or a virtual consult may suit you better. The virtual consult could be used for garden coaching, for garden advice or even for landscape design. You may just need some one off advice on one section of the garden or an assessment on the total area. These virtual consults will run in the same way our onsite consultations work. The only difference is that we may ask you to send across a rough plan of the garden, and some images or videos of the site before we have our consult.
