WHY I HATE SPRING ....
Whether we love spring or not it is here well at least on paper.
I might be going against the tide here for a garden lover and maybe its a controversial topic but I really HATE Spring. Yes the flowers, new growth, spring blossoms and flowering bulbs are a delight but overall I’m not a fan of every other part of Spring. It is my least favourite season. I am definitely a cool weather fan. I love Winter and totally adore Autumn. Summer is fine even though it can be hot at least most of the time we know what to expect. Spring on the other is fickle in nature, it might rain, it might be hot, it might be cold, there may be big storms or there may be a heat wave. All of these things could happen in the one day too! I feel Spring lacks any reliability or depth. It is unreliable. I find the coolness of Autumn and Winter so restorative and energising. The seasons growth slows down however this is where I find my motivation. The flurry of growth and rush of Spring brings on for me a feeling of overwhelm and exhaustion. I wonder if I would feel this way if I lived and gardened in a part of the world where we had snow cover over our gardens for 6 months of the year. I also wonder if I did live in the northern hemisphere where spring happens in the earlier half of the year maybe I would enjoy it more and have more focus and drive whereas here in Australia, Spring arrives in the later half of the year and adds to the build up for the rush of Christmas and the festive season. As sure as the world keeps spinning Spring will arrive, happen and pass. I will be enjoying the beauty of Spring flowers, open gardens and garden festivals that Spring brings but not the mass of weed growth, the increases activity of pest and diseases and hay fever that also accompanies Spring.

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING
On this day I thought I would share all of the different Narcissus varieties ( Daffodils) and Jonquils that are flowering at the moment
They are
King Alfred's (big yellow trumpets)
Tete a Tete (tiny heads of flowers
Orange Progress ( orange centres)
Ice Follies ( cream with buttery yellow)
Jonquil " Grand Monarch" ( clusters of white flowers yellow xentres)
Jonquil Erlicheer ( clusters of double cream flowers)

August is our peak Lavender season ! I really need

August is our peak Lavender season ! I really need to pick and dry more. Standing amongst the sea of mauve flowers is simply stunning. With over 200 Lavender plants the bees and other pollinators are really enjoying their flowers at this time of year

I know some people hate the big yellow flowers of Daffodils but gosh I love them ! These are my tried and trusted King Alfred's Their golden yellow trumpets that sway in the breeze bring so much cheer and prettiness to the winter garden. These have been flowering since late July. A time in our garden when there is not a huge amount of colour and we have many great cloudy days.
A reliable hardy bulb that requires very little care (this bed is only watered by the rain), They have been growing in this garden for the last 5 years.
They have definitely multiplied over the years.
We fertilise with dynamic lifter in April and August each year.

I think growing herbs is much easier than growing vegetables. However you do need to understand the differences between annual herbs and perennials herbs

Left to its own devices in a garden bed, its roots will run wild, smothering nearby plants and taking over the space.How to keep it happy without the takeover:Grow it in its own container or dedicated isolated spot.Keep it in a shady location with reliable moisture.Extra Tip - Put a saucer under the pot in summer filled with water—it loves keeping its roots moist!

My Planting Process
With over 25 years experience in planting plants professionally I always follow the same steps for 4 plants or over 400 plants.Now the question is how many plants have I planted in that time ??

GARDEN TASKS FOR LATE WINTER
-Continuing on with the pruning of our deciduous trees and stone fruit still to be pruned.-The cutting back will continue with our ornamental grasses and perennials.-If you are pruning stone fruits then the key is to first remove dead, damaged or diseased wood. Then remove any lower branches (lift the canopy) and anything that’s considered extension (wayward) growth. Remove crossing branches, then thin out centre of tree so that sunlight can reach the internal sections of the tree when the tree is back in leaf. Some commercial growers also lop back tops so they are flat topped to give maximum light in to these areas. If you do flat top the top of your tree you will need to continue doing this every year.-Keep on top of the weeds and try to fertilise and mulch over the areas once weeded.-If you have broad leaf weeds in your lawns (the most common broad leaf weeds in lawns are clover, cape weed and bindi) treat with a broad leaf spray now before the growth starts. Other weeds such as paspalum, winter grass, nut grass will need to be treated with a selective herbicides. In warmer climates you could also start fertilising your lawn. We will aim to be doing ours in September when it is a little warmer.-In the veggie garden you can start prepping veggies ready for the spring summer crops. These could be started in pots that are stored under cover with some protection or in greenhouses. Some plants you could start would be Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Beans and Zucchinis. I’m also adding more leafy greens – I cannot get enough of these!-Check irrigation systems, make sure all systems are working, fix broken drippers, pop ups and joiners. Changing batteries of controllers if necessary. Ensure the systems are ready to go for when the hot weather hits.-If you have any water features or ponds now is a good time to empty out and clean if needed. If you manage to get this done before a shower of rain you could let the rain fill them back up.-Fix up or repair any hard landscaping parts of the garden such as paths, wall, gravel or pebble areas.
