Planting out around existing trees, shrubs and groundcovers is usually more difficult than when you are starting out with a blank canvas. Question from Laura in Denman Another question from this month's newsletter What is the difference between bagged mulch and loose mulch?
There are a few practical things you need to consider;
What is available locally?
What is the access like on the site?
How much do you need to purchase?
If you are located in a rural area you may be limited to only being able to purchase a pine bark mulch from local suppliers. You can also reach out to local arborist companies to see if you can pick up a load of their mulched cuttings. Ideally this would need to be aged for about 6 – 12 months before using on plants.
If the access in the garden is difficult for example you have many steps then using a bagged mix might be easier. Trying to get wheel barrows up stairs and into garden beds is not easy. You would need to probably use a bucket or a trug which is slow going.
The cost between bagged mixes to buying it in bulk as a loose mix will need to be considered. Generally speaking the loose mulch is going to be much cheaper per cubic metre than bagged mix. If you live in a farming area you may have access to bales of lucerne mulch. This is my all time favourite mulch to use. It is messy to spread but so good for the soil improvement as it breaks down. You do need to check with any baled mulches that there are no weeds or seed heads in the bales before spreading.

What are your tips on selecting sculptures and ornaments for the garden?
There are so many different styles of ornaments on the market. I would aim to try to select one particular material say stone or iron to use as the main material in your features. You may want to have custom pieces made. You may have some sentimental pieces you would like to use in the garden or you could purchase something from a garden centre or outdoor store. Try to ensure any urn or bowls you select have drainage holes (unless they are bird baths) this will stop water from pooling in them and attracting mosquitoes. Another feature you may choose is a water feature or fountain. You will want these to hold however they will need to have some moving water to ensure the water doesn’t become stagnant and attract mosquitoes. Most water features you purchase will just need an electricity source for the pump not an actual water source. I get asked this question all the time, but you don’t need running water to have a water feature the water features are constructed so that they are self-contained and will hold the water. The pump is normally submerged in the water and this will reticulate the water around.

How do I spread pelletised fertiliser ?
It is best to water your garden well then spread the fertiliser then water it in again. Yes they are all a bit smelly but the odour won’t last too long. The more it is watered in or say if it rains the quicker the odour will dissipate. Most of these pelletised mix contains composted chicken manure, fish meal, blood & bone and seaweed They are very easy to spread by hand full. They do not require to be dug into the soil. I normally empty the bagged fertiliser into a wheel barrow and then use a 100mm or 150 mm pot to scoop it out. I then throw it out wearing gloves as you would feeding chickens grain. Most of the animal manure fertilisers are suitable to use on a variety of ornamental trees and natives It is good to do this before it rains to save yourself from having to water it in. I have been known to be running outside as soon as it starts to rain and madly throwing out the fertiliser.

IN THIS MONTH'S NEWSLETTER WE HAVE THE LIST OF OUR GARDEN TASKS FOR MID SPRING 🌸Your winter flowering bulbs will be finishing up now. Ideally it is always best to let the foliage die down naturally before you lift them up however, when the flowers do finish if you have time cut back the dead flower head (not the flowers stems just the dead flower) This will stop them from going to seed and will help the plant put energy back into their bulb for next year’s growth. 🌸For warm season grasses like Buffalo, Couch and Kikuyu, it’s time to do your spring renovation. This might include scarifying, dethatching, aerating, topdressing and fertilizing. 🌸Fertilise your roses. I like to use “Sudden Impact” fertiliser this also works well on hydrangeas, agapanthus, hibiscus and many other flowering plants. Use this now in October to give them a boost before flowering starts. 🌸Purchase and plant out your summer flowering bulbs like lilies, belladonna lilies and gladioli. 🌸In the veggie patch I will be planting out salad leaves (like Mizuna, English Spinach, Rocket), tomatoes, zucchini, corn, cucumbers, capsicum and radishes 🌸Herb Garden – With the chance of frost starting to reduce planting out annual herbs such as basil, dill, coriander and flat leaved parsley. You can also plant out perennial herbs now like rosemary, all varieties of thyme, chives and oregano. 🌸Check that irrigation systems are working to their full potential before the hot days arrive. I also check what irrigation parts we have on hand. I usually like to have some back up parts like joiners, clamps and T’s in the irrigation kit just in case we need them. In this month'snewsletter we have a post about GARDEN ACTIVITES FOR THIS SCHOOL HOLIDAYS With school holidays in full swing I thought this could be a helpful source for some outdoor entertainment. These activities are suitable for a range of age groups. Some may need more of your help than others. These activities could be completed in a garden, on a balcony, in a park and some on a sunny window sill. Try to use what you have if you can. I would say my biggest tip is to just have a designated place where mess can happen in the garden, don’t be precious about too much mess and let the kids run wild, and have free range as long as they are safe and out of harms way. My October Garden Greetings Newsletter is now out. ! To subscribe go to my website (link in bio) or send me a DM with your email. The garden has been taken over by the exuberance of spring with so much lush new growth of all the plants. The rain we received here was most welcome as the soil was really starting to become dry although the cooler temperatures have not been as well received by me
It has been a hectic start to spring with all of this growth keeping us very busy in all of our gardens. We have now completed the final large planting projects for the year. We tend to avoid planting out any large garden areas past this time as the weather (should) start to warm up. Warmer temperatures make it harder for plants to become established and they will require more watering and care in the early days whilst they are settling into the garden. We also don’t tend to book in any planting in these warmer months as we don’t have the time in our schedule to fit in additional planting projects around our regularly garden maintenance clients. This spring/summer period is our busiest as the garden is growing including weeding, hedging, pruning, edging and mowing. It will not slow down now.

Take a moment to appreciate the beauty in these Bluebells. Another favourite bulb, that here in Young flowers after the Daffodils (they start in Mid August) and the Snowflakes (early to mid September). The Bluebells normally start flowering mid to late September. A simple planting that makes for a stunning spring scene.

The main factors that will influence your material choice are what is available in your location and your budget. I suggest you do your research on this as the freight on some materials can be the real cost. Look at local landscape suppliers, garden centres, talk to local landscapers and builders even look on the buy swap and sell pages on Facebook. Then also look online. Some of the most commonly available materials you can use to construct Pathways are natural materials such as Decomposed Granite, Sandstone flagging, Granite, Loose Pebbles (try to only use 10 - 20mm size), Sawn Sandstone. Then more man made products such as Bricks , Tiles or Pavers.
Pavers for example are available in a variety of materials like concrete, bluestone, terracotta, limestone, bricks, reconstituted sandstone

How do you decide on what garden style to create in your garden? This can be very hard to narrow down and to be honest you don’t have to fit into one particular style as such. For clients I always suggest to look through magazines, books or scrolling through social media will give you the opportunity to gather a collection of inspirational photos. This collection of images is almost like creating a mood board for the overall garden design concept. The most important factor to consider when selecting a garden style is that it will fit in with the style or architectural of the house you have and your climate. Work with what you have, embrace the style and try to enhance its features. Also remember when it comes to garden style less is usually more. Try to select a common theme among images you have selected. You don’t need to have one of everything in your garden.

UP THE GARDEN PATH GARDEN QUESTIONS " FOR SEPTEMBER What fertiliser do you recommend? The ideal fertiliser depends on the specific needs of your plants. Consider factors like soil type, plant age, and plant species. I tend to mainly use a pelletised organic mix such as dynamic lifter, sea mungus, rooster booster or organic life. As a general guide if you at a minimum can feed the bulk of your garden with an organic pellet mix at least once every season or at least in Autumn and Spring you will notice a difference. Using an organic (animal produced) fertiliser will; -Feed the plants some basic nutrients they require -It will increase the amount of organic matter in the soil and then in turn help improve the water holding capacity of the soil. -It will improve soil structure
