Here in the @hilltopsregion it is peak Wattle (Acacia) flowering season. It's incredible to think that there are over 1,000 species of wattle in Australia, each with its own unique beauty. Your local area will have species suited to your particular conditions. Their flowers are golden balls of fuzziness that the bees and other pollinators adore at this time of year.

Hello and Welcome to this week’s Gardens at a Glance Newsletter.
You can subscribe via my website.We are now right in to Spring and as expected Spring weather is being unpredictable. It has lived up to its expectation. We have had rain, hot temperatures, cold temperatures, wind, sunshine and thunderstorms. With these extremes the garden is really starting to reawaken with stirrings of new growth, blossoms blooming and bare grey branches becoming leafy and green.I am busy pulling together my talk about tree and plant election for the Warren Open Garden Day. The best part about our business is returning to care for gardens we designed and planted.

Magnolia stellata with her fleeting blooms. I love visiting this Magnolia when she is in her prime.
She always reminds me of when I worked in a retail nursery. The deciduous Magnolias when in flower would always be rushed to the front of the rows or put out in the street display. They were really only every sold when they were in flower. If they missed the selling period they were often retired to the growing property to wait out the year until they flowered again.
It is not a plant that looks brilliant in a pot for sale and too be honest now as a designer I rarely specify them as they only flower for such a brief moment. However it is lovely making the pilgrimage to this tree each year to see its flowers.
Maybe I should use more of them in our gardens ??

Now that Winter is over which winter crops did you have the most success with?
This is a great question to answer now as it will force me to write a list of the best crops. Next winter I will definitely be replanting the following crops as I had the most successful harvest from them;
Sprouting Broccoli (both the green and purple), Rainbow Chard, all the Asian Greens, Tuscan Kale, Celery, Leek, Beetroot, Broad Beans, Spring Onions and Rhubarb.You will notice I have not included the most common winter veggies like Cauliflower Broccoli and Cabbage. I have to say we are not biggest lovers of any of these veggies. They are my least favourite winter crops. They take up so much room in the patch, are really only a single harvest crop and are so slow to develop. I never get them in early enough as I am always still enjoying our summer crops so much I never want to pull out the tomatoes in February to start growing these three crops. Maybe one day if I have more space I will grow them again.

GARDEN TASKS FOR SEPTEMBER My monthly Garden Newsletter for September is now out. ( Subscribe via link in Bio)Spring has arrived! I always have a little hesitation about the arrival of Spring. Yes, I love the warmer temperatures and the beautiful blossoms but along with those positive elements comes the knowing that there will be an outburst of growth on every front including the weeds. We will need to pick up the pace on all things gardening with a flurry of activity to be done in the garden. Here is a few tasks from the long list of things we will be doing over the next few months. For the full list check out this week's newsletter link in Bio.*Finish pruning roses, hydrangeas, fruit trees, wisteria, ornamental grape*Look at what perennials you have growing in the garden. Do they need lifting and dividing?*Ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus, Calamagrostis and Panicum species will have dead seed heads. These seed heads along with the foliage should be cut back to ground level. Now is also the time to lift and divide these grasses.*Remove any self – seeded plants that you don’t need in the garden.*Citrus trees – If you haven’t already done so, remove all fruit from the trees and tip prune them. You should fertilise them now with a specific citrus food or an organic pelletised mix. Try to organise yourself to be in a routine to check for any pests or diseases that may need treatment on the plants. Also realise that now is the time next year’s fruit will start developing, check on the citrus trees watering requirements as the weather is starting to warm up.

Hello Gardening Friends
Welcome to my September Garden Greetings Newsletter and HELLO SPRING !!
This month’s newsletter is arriving to your inboxes a little bit late this month as we have been swamped with lots of exciting projects to complete for our clients, in our home garden and up at the Garden at The Berkshires (my parent’s property). The start of Spring is always the time that the gorgeous Almond blossoms shower the roads of the Hilltops Region in their pink and white petals (as pictured above) I have been taking advantage of the lovely weather in past 2 weeks to get out into the garden as much as possible. We have blitzed our home garden to bring back a bit of order and structure to the space. We have had a pesky root stock vine (from a previous passion fruit vine) suffocating so many of our main structural plants and under storey plants that it just became easier to remove nearly everything out of the garden beds. The great joy of doing this is I now have space to plant out a whole new selection of plants.
We still have our Avocados and Citrus trees shading the area but now that their canopies have lifted above ground there is plenty of space for froundcovers and low shrubs.
In this month’s Newsletter we have all the garden tasks for September, I answer some of your garden questions and I have an article I wrote about my latest planting I completed at the farm (the garden at the Berkshires).I hope you enjoy this month’s issue.
