19 Dec Planting Combinations For Summer
The plantscaping in my garden designs is my most favourite part of the design process. I love considering what the finished look will be once the plants grow and fill in all the gaps between themselves. Plant selection is the key to a successful garden. I always first take into consideration the habit of the plant, its foliage (which includes the foliage texture, foliage shape, foliage size and foliage colour – “the four features of foliage”) and its flower colour and season. In this newsletter I thought I would try to bring to you each month an interesting plant combo that might work in your garden.
Plant Schedule
This month we have a 2 layered planting of Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ and Salvia nemerosa
Site Analysis
Location – Sloping bank area
Soil – Heavy compacted clay
Aspect – All day sun
Size of Bed – 1 metre in length x 1 metre wide.
This combination is the perfect planting for an open sunny location. The Salvia will start flowering mid spring whilst the Sedum has the gorgeous contrasting silver green foliage for the Summer months with pink flowers from mid Summer. Both will die back through the winter for a few months but in spring they flush out with this gorgeous luscious foliage.
