The lemon scented blooms of this Magnolia "Little Gem" always remind me of my first job working in a garden centre in Sydney's Double Bay. These trees were planted in the front display garden and their heavenly scent would waft around our heads as we opened the gates on these warm Summer mornings.

One of the prettiest climbers I think there is. Ho

One of the prettiest climbers I think there is. However it really probably isnt the hardiest climber for our climate. This one is surviving well in a protected morning sun position. It doesnt get hit with any western/ afternoon sun. Has reliable mositure and no exposure to wind.

Valerian or Kiss me Quick or Jupiters Beard or botanically speaking Centranthus gives a lovely splash of colour as the weather starts to warm up. It is a herbaceous perennial. The first time I ever saw this plant it was growing wild out of the rock walls at the side of the road leading up to @villagamberaia, in the hills out of Florence. It was swaying in the breeze alongside Red Poppies and the huge heads of Yellow Verbascum. I do cut back spent flowers before they seed to prevent unwanted spread into bushland or paddocks. This deadheading in spring will most likely encourage another season of flowers in autumn.
It will tolerate quite poor soils as longs as they are well draining.

We do hear alot about IWD ( for good reason!) however we don't see alot about International Men's Day which is actually today - 19th November. So here is me acknowledging this day and the wonderful men and boys in my life who I am forever grateful for.
I always say what I do today is due to my Dad's (and Mum) love of gardening, the outdoors and instilling in me a love of nature and appreciation of everyday beauty that surrounds us. His enduring support and love has always given me the strength to dream big and reach for the stars.
My husband, Phillip @countrygardeneraustralia my life and work partner who is the person that always supports my crazy ideas and dreams.
My beautiful son, Ethan who will become a Man (way too soon) for his kind spirit and joyful wonder of everything especially Dinosaurs.

4 years ago today we decided to join forces in business. Phil @countrygardeneraustralia joined GBD and we honestly have not looked back. Thanks to you Phil for making GBD what it is today. In total with almost 19 years in business I am and we are very grateful to our wonderful clients. We feel very blessed that we get to work in an industry that we love. What is the difference between bagged mulch and loose mulch?
There are a few practical things you need to consider;
What is available locally?
What is the access like on the site?
How much do you need to purchase?
If you are located in a rural area you may be limited to only being able to purchase a pine bark mulch from local suppliers. You can also reach out to local arborist companies to see if you can pick up a load of their mulched cuttings. Ideally this would need to be aged for about 6 – 12 months before using on plants.
If the access in the garden is difficult for example you have many steps then using a bagged mix might be easier. Trying to get wheel barrows up stairs and into garden beds is not easy. You would need to probably use a bucket or a trug which is slow going.
The cost between bagged mixes to buying it in bulk as a loose mix will need to be considered. Generally speaking the loose mulch is going to be much cheaper per cubic metre than bagged mix. If you live in a farming area you may have access to bales of lucerne mulch. This is my all time favourite mulch to use. It is messy to spread but so good for the soil improvement as it breaks down. You do need to check with any baled mulches that there are no weeds or seed heads in the bales before spreading.
