I always find it hard to know the exact right time to prune our Salvia " Santa Barbara" . The Salvia finished flowering back at the end of May or early June. It was very early to flower this year. Whilst the dead flower heads need removing I also like seeing the seasonal change in the garden and they are providing some protection for the new growth which is already shooting through. This had started emerging before the flowers had even finished. We needed to prune now to stop the risk of us cutting off the lovely new growth whilst we are pruning off the old growth.
It is important to cut the stems down as low as possible because these stems will not reshoot they will become dead wood on the plant.
🌱French Lavender- The timing for pruning on our Lavender is easy. It can be pruned back as soon as the flowers go brown. It is important to prune back the dead flowers and some of the older growth so that the plant always remains fresh with the stimulation of new growth. It will improve its overall shape, stop it from looking scraggy and woody and it will encourage the next season of flowers.

The Hass Avocados are now ready to pick from our second Avocado tree. The Haas tree is our Type A variety whilst our Bacon Tree is our Type B variety. All info about why the A and B varieties are important is in that post.

THIS WEEKS PLANT OF THE MOMENT
🌱 Viburnum tinus 🌱

This lovely evergreen flowering shrub can reach a height of 2 metres. Sometimes you do see it as a small tree with the capacity to grow even taller. Its foliage can spread up to 1-2 m in width .
Viburnum tinus has gorgeous dark green glossy leaves. Flowering from mid winter through spring the small flowers are grouped in clusters at the terminal points on each stem. The flower buds are dark reddish pink opening to pale pink/ white flowers. The flowers have a soft fragrance. This shrub is a tough reliable species that can be used as in flowering shrub feature, informal low hedge or a formal hedge. Best planted in a sunny well draining position.

☔🌿GARDEN RELATED TASKS FOR WET WEATHER DAYS 🌿☔
The weather here in the Hilltops region has been wet and cold for a few weeks now. I will never complain about receiving rain as I know what's its like to be in drought so please don't take this post as complaining but it is hard to stay inpired and motivated with your gardening tasks when conditions are not favourable. Working in a light shower is bearable but when it's constant rain and wind all day it really is not fun and probably not great for your own health either. Working in water bogged garden beds can also damage your soil causing compaction so best avoided. Winter is the time of year when I love working in the garden but some days just are just not suitable for gardening. I have compiled a few tasks that are still gardening related that will hopefully still allow you to feel like you have achieved something in the garden when we have continuous days of wet winter weather.
☔ Pull all your garden tools together, give them a clean with warm soapy water (biodegradable detergent is best)
☔Check your garden tools are sharp
☔Oil your secateurs
☔Organise how you store your tools -small hand tools could be stored in a bucket of clean sand.
-Larger cutting tools could be hang on a rack
-Rakes, spades and shovels can be grouped in large garbage bin with bricks in the bottom for stabilisation.
☔ Tidy and arrange your garden equipment storage area so you can easily get to your tools.
☔Check if you are going to be needing any bagged products such as premium garden mix, potting mixture, fertiliser for upcoming plantings etc - if you have a dry spot to store these products you could purchase them now so they are ready to go for when the sun is shining.
☔In between showers check the drainage in your garden beds and across paving areas. Check is the water getting away easily? Do you have pools of water sitting in spots?
☔Try not to let your swimming pools over flow into garden areas. Let water out via overflow/ waste water pipes before it gets to this stage. Constant chlorinated or salt water spilling into beds will have an adverse affect on your soils and plants

🌱 Teucrium fruticans -
Tree Germander 🌱
A lovely spreading shrub that will reach approximately 1- 1.2 metres in height by atleast the same width. It has small narrow oval shaped silver leaves with a white underside. Both the stems and the underside of the leaves have fine hairs or tomentose on them which make them look velvety. It is flowering through winter here at the #thegardenattheberkshires with small mauve flowers that have two lobes similar to other plants in the mint family.
Teucrium enjoys a hot, sunny location with very well draining soil. It is highly drought and frost tolerant. Teucrium will not tolerate a position with constant moisture/ wet feet and I have noticed it does not like humidity too much either.
They can be clipped to a hedge or rounded shape quite easily.

Another gorgeous silver foliage plant that just happens to also be a member of the mint family (LAMIACEAE ) this is becoming a trend with #theplantofthemoment

🌱Do not use a bench that has to be secured to the trunk of the tree in anyway
🌱You will need to leave enough space around the trunk of the tree so that the trunk can still grow. The amount of space needed will depend on the species and how fast it grows. I would suggest you leave a 5 - 10 cm gap right around the trunk between the outer trunk and the bench. This should give you about 5- 10 years atleast of clearance before you have to adjust the bench...or maybe even longer.
From my research a general guide of 1- 2 cm growth in the diameter of the tree trunk each year is a good
🌱Select a tree bench that can be adjusted or extended.
🌱Select a tree that has a level ground level around it base so the bench can easily sit level without having to prop up legs to balance the seat.
🌱Custom made benches will be more expensive but they will allow you to have the perfect design and size that is made to fit your tree.

Even after ten years of gardening here at #thegardenattheberkshires I still sometimes get surprised by suddenly seeing a different perspective or view of the garden. Today I was working at the western end of the back garden - I had squatted down to pull a weed and just looked up to see this view. Looking across the rows of Buxus and Santolina through the bare branches of the Pears to the silver section of the garden bed. In the back ground there are the towering Sugar Gums with glimpses of the valley looking towards Murringo.
A joyful surprise that is unexpected after all these years. Taking a different path through your garden might open up these perspectives to you. The seasons will also affect these views. If the pears were in leaf the view would not have been as open and have a totally different feel.
There is also something to be said for the neighboring or borrowed landscape. Using this landscape within your garden by either enhancing the borrowed landscape or framing the view to the borrowed landscape gives another layer to your garden and if you are in a small space it can make your space feel bigger.

(White Cedar)

This weeks post is a bit different you will see in the videos I cover a few ways these trees have been used in landscape at #thegardenattheberskhires and history of theses two trees.

The White Cedar is a deciduous small to medium size tree. It has been planted out on farm properties for a hundred years or more. Traditionally planted out as a shade tree around stock yards. It has become naturalised in some areas of Australia. It has also become a weed species in some areas however it is a very hardy tree that has many wonderful ornamental qualities. It is a native from China, Japan and India.
Growing to a height of 8 - 12 m x width of 8- 9m
It has clusters of mauve to pink star shaped flowers in late spring. These flowers develop into green berries by winter they have turned yellow. The White Cedar has glossy green leaves that create a good amount of shade in the warmer months.
You can see in our attached images and videos that the habit can vary a bit especially if in areas where stock can munch on them. Overall they normally have narrow broad dome habit.
I will mention that all parts of this plant are ☠ poisonous ☠ if consumed so try to keep little fingers away from nibbling on the berries. If any part of the tree is consumed please seek medical advice.
An interesting fact also is the yellow berries are dried and used as rosary beads in Southern Italy.
This tree is highly drought tolerant and frost tolerant down to minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Winter has arrived here in the Hilltops region. Cold grey days with a consistent amount of rain each week. It is definitely the winter conditions many people like to hibernate in however it is a really good time to be out in the garden to do your Winter Tree Pruning.

-Dead heading your flowering annuals regularly will help encourage new flowers to develop.
-Remove the flower down at the base of the stem.
- This also applies to any flowering shrubs.

(Persea americano)
This lovely medium sized evergreen tree will reach - 5 – 7 metres in height x 4 metres wide. (you can keep them shaped so they are more contained in one area or even in pots). They have large glossy green oval shaped leaves. Their flowers are small creamy green in colour. The flowers are quite inconspicuous, you don't really grow them for their flower display. They like a well draining, deep, organic soil with a pH around 5 – 6. If you do not have a well-draining soil, try to create a mound prior to planting.When you mulch cover this total area. When watering ensure you water the total area. The mound will help prevent the Avocado from having wet feet. Avocados will need to be kept moist but not wet. They enjoy a long slow water so that the moisture will get down to their roots.
Avocados enjoy a sunny location ideally sheltered location from wind. For the first 2 or 3 years you will need to also provide protection from frost. Once established if they are a variety that likes the cooler temperatures, they will be fine without frost protection. The varieties we have planted are the Hass and the Bacon – they will tolerate temperatures down to minus 5° C.
They will need a nitrogen rich fertiliser applied each month through the Summer season.Here in the Hilltops region you will need to plant varieties that can tolerate more cold than others. Another consideration is that whilst they do self-pollinate you will have more fruit if you plant two trees in the one area. Each of these will need to be an A and B Type. All Avocados are categorised into A and B Types, this refers to their flowering times. Avocado flowers botanically speaking are “bisexual” which means they have both male and female reproductive organs. The trees are classed as an A or B type depending on when each of the flower types open.
For example - Type A, Avocado will have flowers that open ready for pollination in the morning and then in the afternoon the blossoms will be releasing their pollen to pollinate other flowers. INFO CONTINUED IN COMMENTS
