Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon)
A gorgeous flowering deciduos shrub which flowers well from mid to late summer. Naturally growing to form an upright vase shape shrub it can reach 3 metres in height and 3 metres in width.
This shrub enjoys a full sun position with some protection from strong winds. Flowering with either white, pink or purple flowers. It makes a perfect back drop to any garden, can be hedged or even used as a feature tree. It is very tough being quite tolerant of drought, heat, humidity and poor soil.

Planting combination you can use in your garden.Planted Winter 2024. This is it's first Summer🌱 Garden Location- Rear Garden of residential property in Young, NSW🌱 Brief from Client- Create a pretty planting with interesting foliage and textures. Garden bed is viewed from lower paved area that runs parallel with the raised garden bed. Some height would be required to break up view to garage in rear. Also softening of fence line. Lower maintenace efective planting. 🌱Location - east facing garden bed that receives 5-6 hours of direct morning sun in Summer. 4- 5 hours of direct morning sun in Winter. Part Sun through the rest of day. The garden bed receives bright light in the afternoons. 🌱Soil Type- Clay base with organic matter (compost/ dynamic lifter/ premium garden mix) dug through before planting. It is quite well draining as it is raised and on a slope.🌱Irrigation- After establishment it has had drip irrigation on the bed for 1 hour every second or third day. Plus some hand watering on the hottest of days. Next summer this will be significantly reduced 🌱 Mulch- It was well mulched at time of planting with lucerne hay. This will be topped up through winter winter 2025🌱Fertilising- an organic composted animal manure in pellet form will be used each season. 🌱Plant Combination -Taller feature plants ( to soften view of garage) - Bay Trees ( Laurus nobilis) to be kept pruned as tall narrow columns- Mid Level Structure, texture and Flowers- Coastal Rosemary (Westringia Aussie Box)Salvia muirii. Both to be maintained in a rounded bun shape. - Strappy Leaf Structure - Bearded Iris (Iris germanica)🌱Design Solution I started with the placement of the Bay Trees. These are evenly spaced across the length of the bed - following the length of the bed. The remaining plants are then set in groups one of each species. Repeated on each side of the Bay Tree. These Bay Trees will be pruned to shape to form a column like shape. They could be uplite at night with garden lighting to highlight them and give shadows to the space.

This means you are lightly pruning off the new growth on your plant - removing the tips.You can use secateurs, scissors or you might even just use your fingers. HAPPY FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN
On the calendar autumn starts today however in reality I don’t think the thermometers have been informed as we are still in for high temps over the next 7 days. The mornings are a lot darker than a few weeks ago and I can feel a slight signal in the air that the transition is approaching but this year I think the cool crisp mornings are running a little late. I always welcome the season of autumn as I find all elements of this season to be much more conducive to gardening. The cooler days, the brisk breeze and the sparkling sunny blue skies inspire me to be outside. Even the colour palette of autumn is more appealing to me than summer. Summer colours I think are vibrant, warm, bright. They have a flashy -ness to them that I do appreciate but am not drawn too. The autumnal tones like claret, mustard, pumpkin, gold, are all quite subtle, rich and earthy. They seem to be understated and muted which are much more suited to me, my style and gardening choices. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long for those autumn days.

In this month's newsletter I wrote a post about Plants for Summer Beauty.
Working in a variety of different gardens every month for our garden management clients we have first hand experience on so many plants in every season , I am always on the look out for those plants that I think cope well with the hot, dry conditions of the warmer months. They don’t require lots of extra fuss and will still reward us with stunning flowers even on the harshest of days. Here are my favourites;Crepe Myrtle, Plumbago, Day Lily, Agapanthus (all varieties), Hibiscus syriacus, Dahlias (mainly the garden variety ones that are known to be a little hardier such as “Mystic Haze”), Gaura, Rudibeckia, Oleander, Salvia Hot Lips and others from the Heatwave Collections, Belladonna Lilies.

According to the calendar we only have a few weeks left of summer however I’m not sure the lovely autumn weather will arrive to us that quickly. I have a feeling the higher temperatures will linger on into March. Here are the garden tasks for this month;Watering has been the most important task on these 35 plus degree days. The amount of watering will be dependent on many factors such as the soil type, exposure to sun, how much wind there has been and age or establishment time of plants. I always try to water the garden in the early morning and on the hottest days I will water at night too. To really know how much water your garden needs you will need to understand your garden. The best way of doing this is to walk around your space and assess how the plants are looking. Are the leaves on the plants upright and rigid or are they droopy and limp? Remember plants like conifers wont tell you either way so the only way of checking if they are dry is by digging some holes or pushing your finger down into the soil to see what moisture is in the ground. Over time the more you wander around your garden taking in what it looks like after a hot day or what it looks like after rain you will learn what your garden needs.In regard to irrigation systems, make sure they are working. Take note of areas where next year you may need to extend the lines out. If you have sprinklers make sure they are not being blocked by the summer growth on plants or their flowers.Start sowing seeds of your winter and spring flowering annuals now. These are flowers such as violas, pansy, primula, cineraria, love in the mist, paper daisy and english daisy.Sow seeds for winter crops such as silver beet, spinach, swiss chard, rainbow chard, onion seeds, broccolini, cabbage and cauliflowers.Prepare veggie garden area for your Brussel sprout seedlings as February is the time you need to get your seedlings in the ground . Citrus are starting to develop the next season of fruit so now is the time to ensure they have adequate moisture and good nutrients in the soil. For more info check out my substack page

It is through the summer month that the benefits of planting trees really becomes very obvious. I know with our garden management jobs when there is a forecast of heatwave conditions we are always very happy to be working in gardens that have established trees. The temperature out in the hot direct sunlight on these days can be stifling but when you have the opportunity to garden under the canopy of mature trees it is much more bearable. I took the opportunity in recent weeks to confirm what we already knew by actually setting up a temperature thermometer out in the sun and then in the shade. The difference was three degrees which makes an enormous difference when you are completing physical work. We are forever grateful to our clients who years ago who planted these trees. This is a reminder to plant trees now so you may get an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of them. The micro climates that have developed under the shade of these trees not only gives the gardener shelter but allows for a whole different selection of plants to grow. In last week’s “Gardens at a Glance” column I also recommended in dry conditions to at least try to focus on watering one area of grass. Even if it is only a small area to maintain some greenness in the garden. These areas too will give you some reprieve form the heat compared to an area of brown crunchy dead grass.
